Chapter 9

The morning passed quite pleasantly, actually, and it was good fun to simply hang out, chatting with Ida Belle, Gertie, and Fortune. Eventually, the time came to round up the men and get both them and the supplies into Ida Belle’s truck and Fortune’s jeep.

Shortly before we were to leave, Fortune saw Anna come down the stairs alone, and she tapped me on the shoulder to signal that I should follow her.

Out in the back garden, I saw the glimmer of a window in the sunlight and I imagined that it might have been Gertie’s, from which she had a perfect view of Mr Wilder’s mansion. I smiled at the thought of her in her upstairs bathroom spying on the place using her powerful binoculars. Those Sinful ladies were no slouches when it came to such matters.

“Anna,” Fortune said when we caught up to her. “I’d like to ask a few more questions. It’s important that you try to recall everything that happened that morning at Francine’s.”

“But I have already told you what I remembered.”

“Well, would you please indulge me and go over once again what led you to lose Mrs Daly’s necklace.”

“But do you remember anything about bleach?” Fortune said.

“Bleach?”

“Yes bleach. It seems a small bottle of the stuff mysteriously turned up in the ladies bathroom at Francine’s, yesterday morning.”

Anna wrinkled her brow and looked off in the distance. “Oh, now I know what you’re talking about. That was no mystery at all.”

Anna chuckled. “That was all Julia’s doing. No, there’s no mystery there.”

“Oh?” Fortune said.

“Julia is very particular about germs. At first it seemed a little odd to me that she had walked with a bottle of bleach and then I remembered she was a nurse. That’s how she and David met, you know. So, she must have seen first-hand how germs can really mess up a body. Anyway, she had the bleach in her purse. She said she carries some around with her all the time. She used it on herself and me when she fell in the bathroom.”

“She fell in the bathroom?” Fortune said.

“Yes, just after we entered the door and closed it shut behind us, I guess Julia misjudged how fast she was walking and bumped into me. I wobbled a bit but I heard Julia come crashing to the floor behind me. When I turned around she was sprawled all over the floor.”

“And then what exactly happened?” Fortune said. “It’s important that you recount everything.”

“Well, she got on her hands and knees. She struggled to get back on her feet and held onto my hands to get back up again. But she slipped again and grabbed me by the neck to support herself. When she came to, she seemed very embarrassed and upset. She
